Dating Background Checks
If you're considing online dating, but are concerned about your
personal safety, there are steps you can take to protect yourself, such as
doing a background check on your potential companion.
Safety while dating on the internet is a concern for both men and women just
like it is in the real brick and mortar world of dating.
Online safety, for the most part, is simply a matter of good old common sense.
You wouldn't hand out your personally identifying information to a stranger
that you met on a street or in a bar and the same should be true of people
you meet while dating on the internet.
Protecting information that could tell a stranger where you live and how
to find you is something most women do almost instinctively.
Men are not as careful. They think they can take care of themselves and they
can as a rule. The problem is that when a man gives a woman information that
can identify where he lives, and tells her where he works and when, he has
also provided that information to everybody the woman knows.
What is the information that makes it possible for someone you are dating
online to find out more information about you than you gave or wanted them
to have? You might be surprised.
1. Your ISP email address: If a person with whom you are having a conversational
relationship online is so inclined, he or she can use your ISP email address
to locate you. He or she can find out the address of the computer that you
are using and that gives them your precise location.
Safety Precaution: Use the on site
email system that your online dating membership site provides or use a free
email account like Hotmail or Yahoo. Do NOT give out your ISP email address,
such as you@aol.com, etc.
2. Your place of employment: If you tell the person who you are dating online
exactly what company you work for, you have provided information that makes
it possible for them to get your home address as well as you telephone number.
They can simply call the personnel office at your place of employment and
get that information by pretending to be a police officer or they can send
written communication that looks official enough and get the information
in writing. They could also be waiting for you when you get off work.
Safety Precaution: Do not tell your online
dating partner the name or the location of your employer. For example, you
can tell him or her that you are a 'legal secretary,' but you don't want
to give them too much information and tell them that you work for 'Brown,
Schmidt and Crane.'
3. The name of the school your child attends: Our kids are our most valuable
asset. We certainly do not ever want to put them at risk. However, if you
provide your online dating partner with the name of the city in which you
reside and the name of the school that you child attends, he or she can find
you AND your child.
Safety Precaution: Avoid giving out specific
information about you and your life. Simply do not name specific places or
events that will make it possible for a determined online dating partner
to locate you or your family.
Although online dating is safe for the most part, please use your common
sense. In addition, there are many web sites online that will enable you
to protect yourself and give yourself some peace of mind.
