Dating Guide For Men

Dating is the age old system by which men and women go out together socially. In today's less than formal world, dating is often done very casually in that rather than a formal 'date', men and women meet and hang out together in public places like bars and single's clubs. However, once a man and a woman have met in a public place, if they have 'hit it off', so to speak, they will then begin to actually go out on dates together.

There are certain guidelines that apply to dating. Long ago these guidelines were much clearer than they are today but still there are guidelines.

Who Pays?

In the past men invited women out for a date. Women did not invite men. That is just the way it was. Today things have changed. Women invite men at least as often as men invite women. In those long ago days when men did the inviting they also did the paying. That rule has changed as well. Today the general rule is the host or hostess (the host or hostess is the one who invited the other) pays unless there has been a prior arrangement for each to pay their own way.

Some men are very, very uncomfortable with this arrangement but it is one that came with the demands of women for equality. If she invited you, then she will expect to pay. If you invited her, then you pay. This goes for even the most casual 'date' like having a drink after work or a cup of coffee after a meeting.

Date and Time?

Again, in earlier times, men provided transportation for a date. Always. That has changed, as well. But there is one thing that does remain the same. Being on time is still a rule. This rule applies to formal as well as informal dates and it applies to offline and online dating.

You need to be where you say you will be and at the time that you say you will be there. There is no excuse good enough for being late. The promptness rule applies whether you are the host or she is the hostess. Being late isn't 'cool.'

What to Wear?

There's no doubt that you have your own 'style' and having your own style isn't a bad thing at all. It might even be what attracted the woman to you in the first place. However, your 'style' needs to include a casual as well as a 'dressed up' variation. What I'm trying to say here is that you need to be dressed appropriately for the occasion.

If your usual style is 'cool' jeans that is fine for many occasions. However, if you have invited a woman to have a meal at an upscale restaurant, you need to clean up and dress up your style.

Behavior

You should do as your mother said and 'mind your manners' when you are on a date even a very casual one. Men who are loud-mouthed know-it-alls may think that they impress their date but they are in fact embarrassing her.

Keep your voice down and be polite to wait staff. Keep your strong opinions about controversial topics (religion and politics) to yourself.

*Free hint: Chivalry is an old fashioned word and the acts associated with chivalry are no longer expected. If you would really like to impress your date, surprise her by opening doors, helping her to remove her coat and pulling out a chair for her. You might get lucky.
