Flirting and Body Language
Flirting is most likely the oldest art form on earth. It isn't hard to envision
Eve twisting her hair around a finger and shyly glancing at Adam and Adam
standing tall and straight with his shoulders squared glancing back.
Everybody flirts whether they are conscious of the fact or not. Body language
and flirting are as inseparable as two sides of the same piece of paper.
Not only do people flirt but animals flirt as well. There is some kind of
mating ritual among most all mammals. In some species many males may vie
for the attention of one female. The males fight each other to gain the female's
approval but the final choice is made be the female. Does that sound a bit
familiar?
Flirting and body language are the first stages of the mating process in
humans as well. Both men and women flirt and use their body language to
accomplish the task but they flirt in very different ways.
A ten year old boy might sock a girl he thinks is cute on the arm. It's the
ten-year-old version of flirting. A ten-year-old girl might trip a boy that
she is interested in. That is also flirting at the ten-year-old level.
As we mature, the flirting becomes less physical and more subtle. Since most
women are by nature masters of subtlety, they have a definite advantage but
it doesn't usually take men very long to catch up.
The movies have done a great job of teaching people how to flirt. The older
movies were better at it than the more modern one. Who doesn't remember those
shy glances across a crowded room from beneath lowered eyelashes or the dashing
hero leaning casually against a wall and lifting his glass in the direction
of the leading lady? "Here's looking at you kid." ~Swoon~
Women flirt with their hair, their heads and their eyes.
Young women spend hours and a lot of money working on their hair. Hair, as
they say, is a woman's crowing glory. When flirting they will twist a strand
of hair around a finger or toss their heads.
More eye make up is purchased each year than any other form of cosmetics.
Mascara is used to make eye lashes appear longer and eye shadow is used to
enhance the shape and depth. A shy glance from beneath slightly lowered lashes
used to be called the 'come hither glance' and although the term has faded,
the effects have not.
Men flirt with their posture or stance, their eyes and their hands.
When a man sees a woman that he may be interested in, he will automatically
suck in his gut and square his shoulders. It is almost a reflex reaction.
A man will try to appear casual and dominate by leaning against a wall and
crossing one foot over the other.
He will sometimes hook one thumb into a front pants pocket and almost fondle
a glass or other object with the other.
He will stare at the woman that he is interested in until she looks at him
and then he will make eye contact.
When the man approaches the woman he will give her a warm but firm
handshake....this is the ten-year-old punch on the arm all grown up.
