Internet Dating Guide
The internet is a great place! Almost everybody uses the internet to some
extent in today's modern computerized world. We use it to shop and we can
find an abundance of information about safe internet shopping. For example;
we wouldn't dream of putting our credit card information onto a site that
didn't have those little seals that guarantee the sites are safe and hacker
proof. There is an abundance of information about how to safely bank online
as well. We all know about signing in securely. We guard our user names and
pass words with zeal and carefully follow all of the expert safety advice
about online shopping and online banking.
You might say that online dating is quite a bit like online shopping and
online banking. Online dating is 'shopping' for relationships and 'banking'
on the outcomes.
When you join an online dating site, the site will give you the opportunity
to do two things. The first thing that you will be allowed to do is to post
a personal profile or personal advertisement. The second thing is that you
will be allowed to post a picture of yourself with your profile. Both are
important first steps to a successful online dating experience.
1. Much has been written about writing and posting personal profiles and
advertisements on dating sites. The bottom line is that honest is now, always
has been and always will be the best policy. Tell the truth about yourself.
Make your headline an attention getter and use humor at every opportunity.
2. The picture that you post needs to actually be of YOU and not someone
that you think looks better. The picture needs to show you smiling and relaxed.
You can have pictures taken by professional photographers who specialize
in photos that are to be posted online. It might be a good investment.
When you contact a potential dating partner or are contacted by a potential
dating partner, take it slow and easy. You need to be patient and take the
time to learn about a person before you decide that you have met the person
of your dreams and start making plans for meeting.
Remember that predators do not waste a lot of time trying to extract personal
information. If you don't provide your real name and the name of the city
in which you really reside quickly, predators will quickly lose interest
and move on to easier targets. If your online dating partner is NOT a predator,
then he or she will also want to take things slow and not start exchanging
personal information too quickly.
Send emails and chat using the on-site email and chat features of the online
dating site that you are a member of. Never give out your ISP email address
or use other chat programs like ICQ or AIM.
After a period of months (not days or weeks....remember predators) and when
you have determined that your online dating partner is someone that you would
like to meet in person, it is best to schedule that first face to face meeting
in a public place and during daylight hours. It is also wise to schedule
a very short first meeting....a cup of coffee rather than a meal or an entire
evening together.
If it is the real thing, it will grow. If turns out to not be the real thing,
you likely dodged a bullet. Time and patience are the keys to successful
internet dating.
