Finding Your Soul Mate
You've heard the term, of course, 'soul mate'. The term is tossed about rather
lightly today but what exactly does it mean? Well, according to my sources
(dictionary and thesaurus) a soul mate is "a person with whom one has a strong
attraction...." From personal experience I'd like to add a comma and
"compatibility, complimentary strengths and weaknesses and an equally deep
and committed love for one another."
A soul mate is not another person who is identical to you in every way. Soul
mates are more like cogs in wheels that mesh together and make the whole
machine work. Each needs to zig where the other zags. Each makes the other
stronger.
So where does one go in search of a real soul mate? That is a good question
and one that there isn't a specific answer for. Your soul mate can be anywhere.
Maybe you have already met him or her and just haven't realized it yet. Maybe
they work in the same building where you work or maybe they live in another
city or state or even another country.
Call me a hopeless romantic if you want to, but I honestly believe that there
is someone for everyone. I don't believe that those perfect relationships
happen very often but when you see one you know it. As for finding one for
yourself, yes, I do believe that it is entirely possible....not easy, mind
you, but possible.
The first step in finding your own real soul mate comes with knowing yourself.
You have to really take a long, hard and very, VERY honest look at who you
are. You have to evaluate your own strengths and weaknesses and you have
to do it with complete honesty.
When you come to know yourself you will then know what one half of the whole
that you are seeking looks like. Not only do you need to know yourself, you
also need to like yourself. If you have some major flaws that even you dislike,
then put forth the effort to correct them. Remember that you must not only
know yourself but you must like yourself.
Now you are ready to find your soul mate. You are going to be physically
attracted to him or her. Physical attraction comes first but it is by no
means the only test.
As you get to know each person you meet you will see just how compatible
you are. You will find out if your strengths and weaknesses are complimentary.
Do you bring out the best in one another? Can you laugh at the same things?
Can you disagree without every minor skirmish turning into a major conflict?
Do you have common goals? Can you agree on major issues? All of these answers
take time to arrive at.
Now for the final test: every moment that you are not with him or her, are
you thinking about him or her? If you could choose to be with any person
on earth with no exceptions, would you choose him or her? Can you imagine
your life without him or her in it? If your answers to the above questions
are yes, yes and no, then you feel deep and abiding love. If he or she feels
the same way, you have found your soul mate.
